Description
Saldo is a true California Zinfandel created by Dave Phinney, founder and winemaker of Orin Swift Cellars and The Prisoner. For Saldo, Phinney cherry-picks from top Zin vineyards across Northern California’s best regions—Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Contra Costa, Amador and Mendocino Counties. Without the constraints of a more specific AVA, Dave has the freedom to source fruit from numerous regions, always searching out legendary vineyards with distinct attributes. Saldo’s bright cherry flavors are balanced by spice and acidity. Saldo is not jammy or heavily oaked, it is a fairly restrained style of Zin. Saldo has received 90+ ratings and was chosen among the Wine Spectator Top 100 wines of 2010.Saldo is a patchwork of choice vineyards, brought together to create a balance, or “Saldo”. Dave is always on the hunt for proven vineyards from historic growing regions with dedicated and skilled growers. Each vineyard is unique and important to the blend. Whether by elevation, exposure, age of the vines, dry farming practices or rare soil types, the vineyards give Saldo it’s character. Monte Rosso, Beatty Ranch, Eagle Point, Rockpile, Bismark, Alta Vista, Bald Mountain and Toffaneli are just some of the revered Zinfandel vineyards that make up the Saldo blend.
A rare breed, Dave Phinney has trail blazed progressive wine styles with his Orin Swift Cellars portfolio. He thrives on seeking out incredible vineyards, and delivering great wine. According to Dave, “the basic principle is to over deliver reasonably priced wine in a great package.” With the tremendous success of The Prisoner, Phinney pursued great vineyards for his cadre of unique wines that take a decidedly non-traditional approach. By partnering with Agustin Huneeus to handle sales for Saldo and The Prisoner, Dave is able to spend more time in the vineyard focusing on sourcing great fruit from the best growers and making the best wines he can.
The minimalist, non-traditional dynotape depiction of the Saldo label is both eye-catching and unique. Phinney personally names and designs all of his projects. The edgy, hipster look speaks to everything that Saldo represents –under the radar, sought-after and hand-crafted. Saldo is currently featured for it’s intriguing package in “How Wine Became Modern” an exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art .
